Description

The beautiful Helix Nebula also known as "The Eye of God". It is believed to have formed from a very large Supernova explosion around 10,000 years ago. What we see is an expanding shell of material shed from the star known as a Planetary Nebula. All raw elements are formed from nuclear fusion within stars and seeded into space with their dying explosions to eventually become something new. This one has the distinction of being the closest known to Earth. What remains of the original star is now a very dense dwarf star seen exactly in the center of the nebula.

This is something I have always wanted to try with this target since it has such great signal and different details in both narrow band and broadband. Data sets are combined across the entire image to try and bring out what I felt were the best details and colors from both. I am not sure I would ever try this again but I like the unique result.  Data sets are courtesy of Telescope Live from El Sauce Observatory, Chile July, 2023.
